•Data on PCV herd effects may influence policy makers’ decisions on PCV use.•We investigated to what extent analytical methodology influences PCV herd effect estimates.•We used different statistical methods and analysis periods on IPD surveillance data from 4 countries.•We show that the choice of statistical method and analysis periods affects PCV herd effect estimates.
