•Three Mmps genes have been identified in the silkworm.•Inhibition of Mmps activity inhibited fat body cell dissociation and ovary development.•Overexpression of each Mmp promoted these developmental processes.•Mmp3 and Mmp1 have the strongest and weakest stimulatory effects, respectively.
