Interviews following physical trauma: A thematic analysis

•Four key themes emerged as focal points for emergency healthcare professionals.•Physical descriptions of pain and the acceptance of death was present in the data.•Shortly after traumatic experiences, participants were able to show positivity.•Trauma survivors felt powerless at the time of injury.•An inability to fully recall events was reported within the data.
