•Many countries are reforming the organisation of primary care provision.•The Veneto Region (Italy) introduced the Integrated Medical Group (IMG) in 2016.•IMGs consist of multi-professional teams with at least four GPs and several nurses.•IMGs are required to be open 12 h a day and to assure out-of-hours services.•By mid-2017, 20% of GPs were working as part of IMGs.
