Experimental investigation of the thermal and disinfection performances of a novel hydrodynamic cavitation reactor.

•An effective approach to disinfect water using a novel HCR is performed.•The thermal and disinfection performances are evaluated.•100% of disinfection rate of Escherichia coli was achieved with a reasonable cost.•Achieved treatment rate is several hundred times greater than that in recent studies.
