•Roughly 1 in 5 patients (22.7%) with opioid-managed LDDD was taking >120 mg OMEUs before spinal fusion surgery.•The rate of opioid use remained high even after spinal fusion surgery for LDDD.•rhBMP use was not associated with either the discontinuation of, or decrease in, opioid analgesic therapy after surgery.
