•CM is associated with an increased risk of psychopathological symptoms.•CM is associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and chronic bronchitis/emphysema/COPD in adulthood.•Psychopathological symptoms drive some proportion of the association between child maltreatment and physical health.•The association between child maltreatment and physical health is not driven entirely by psychopathological symptoms.
