Evidence of degradation of hair corticosterone in museum specimens.

•Hair from museum specimens contains glucocorticoid hormones.•This may allow for stress to be studied over long time periods.•We found that older mouse specimens had lower hormone levels.•We also showed museum preparation techniques could affect hair hormone levels.•Care is warranted when using museum specimens to infer temporal patterns of stress.
