•The miscibility of DSPC:PEG40St mixtures from 9:1 to 5:5 mol ratios were reported.•A scale was established for the interpretation of BAM images.•PEG40St well distributed in DSPC at lower mole ratios.•PEG40St and DSPC phase separated at higher mole ratios.
