•A new neutral polysaccharide (CERP1) was extracted and purified from the residue of Codonopsis Pilosula.•CERP1 was a linear molecule with short side chains possessing potential hypoglycemic activity.•CERP1 could be explored as a functional food or supplement from industrial waste.
