•Bicoid is a maternally transcribed gene which plays a pivotal role during the early developmental stage of Drosophila melanogaster.•A new fundamental insights into gene cross-regulations of segmentation network is presented.•An accurate mathematical model for bicoid signal extraction is proposed.
