•The MIPO technique for clavicular shaft fractures could reduce the incidence and area of post-operative numbness.•Comparing to open plating, the patients who underwent MIPO were more satisfied with the surgery.•There was no significant difference in shoulder joint function outcome and pain between MIPO and open plating.
