•We report the functional genomic analysis of Psychrobacter sp. DAB_AL43B.•In silico reconstruction of the strain’s metabolism was supported experimentally.•Genes for NO2− and NO reductases suggest that the strain is an aerobic denitrifier.•Genetic basis of anthracene degradation and heavy-metal resistance was identified.•Novel Psychrobacter-specific vectors based on the DAB_AL43B plasmids were created.
