•The return of the ex-patriot Chinese population to Jiangmen, Guangdong, contributes to the importation of ZIKV in China.•The fever screen system in international airport was valid, but not enough to detect imported ZIKV cases.•The imported ZIKV belong to the Asian lineage but with different evolution transmission routes.•The ex-patriot Chinese returning from ZIKV hyper-endemic areas indicate the potential of ZIKV transmission in Guangdong.
