•We searched carcinogenic gene alterations due to smoking in the prostate gland.•Smoking was the main factor that had an effect on p53, p16, and PTEN expressions.•There were no significant effects of age and inflammation on the gene׳s expressions.•Gene alterations due to smoking can be detected immunohistochemically.
