•Aldosterone acts in a rapid and nongenomic manner on NHE1 in IRPTC cells.•Cytosolic calcium increase and GR are required for aldosterone effects on NHE1.•Rapid aldosterone effects are mediated by PLC, PKC, and MAP/ERK.
