摘要
•Stress-induced depression causes dendritic spine atrophy in the cortex.•We hypothesize that electroconvulsive seizures (ECS) reverse spine defects.•The hypothesis is tested in a neuroendocrine model of depression in mice.•ECS rescues stress-induced spine morphology changes on pyramidal neurons.•ECS elevates specific isoforms of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
