Streptozotocin alters glucose transport, connexin expression and endoplasmic reticulum functions in neurons and astrocytes.

•Study showed the varied responses of neurons & astrocytes toward STZ which tend to mimic AD-like pathology.•Deficiency in glucose uptake and transport leads to mitochondrial stress and apoptosis by STZ.•STZ exhibited overexpression of GRP78, GADD and caspase-12 confirming endoplasmic reticulum stress in both cell types.•STZ-induced stress responses to cells affected the cellular communication via gap junctions.
