•In total, this study included 425 patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).•Most coping styles show decreases one-year after experiencing a mTBI.•High self-efficacy is linked to high active coping and low passive coping.•Passive coping was associated with poorer recovery.•Passive coping could identify at-risk patients and form a target for intervention.
