•Efficient and regio-specific modification of CS was developed.•A new unsaturated derivative of CS (ΔCS) was synthetized.•The double bonds increased chemical reactivity of ΔCS towards free-radicals.•ΔCS is a biocompatible material suitable for biomedical and cosmetic applications.
