Abstract
•Hourly radar rainfall records were matched with more than 500,000 crashes in Texas.•Rainfall increased the total Relative Accident Risk (RAR) up to 57% in Texas.•A direct relationship between rainfall intensity and RAR (R2 = 0.76) was found.•Effect of rainfall on RAR shows significant spatial variability.•The rainfall impact on crash risk is higher in rural (less developed)/drier areas.
