•Development of the human lateral geniculate nucleus was described on morphology.•A deep groove appeared on the ventro-lateral surface at 21 postmenstrual weeks.•An arcuate interlaminar zone was noticed in the dorso-medial region at 20–21 weeks.•Nuclear volume increased exponentially with age during 20–39 weeks.•Mean neuronal profile area increased linearly with age during 25–39 weeks.
