•The FNE of PSG recordings is characterized by sleep disruption.•There is a PSG-related FNE among community-dwelling older men.•The magnitude of the PSG-related FNE was small in this cohort.•There appeared to be a “recovery” night of sleep after PSG.•Certain characteristics affect the level of the PSG-related FNE.
