Caring characters and professional identity among graduate nursing students in China-A cross sectional study.

•Chinese graduate nursing students possessed positive caring characters while their professional identity was at a low level.•Caring can be a contributing factor to the formation of students' professional identity.•Attitude and perception of caring should be further emphasized in nursing education.
