•Intermedin had a protective effect on cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI).•Intermedin could reduce pathological neuronal injury and infarction formation.•Intermedin decreased the levels of LC3II/LC3I and BECLIN1 and increased P62 level.•Intermedin could attenuate the effects of autophagy induced by CIRI.
