•The efficacy of scalp cooling in preventing CIA is independent of having either thin or thick hair.•To improve the efficacy of scalp cooling, its efficacy should increase throughout all chemotherapy cycles.•The patients' opinion of hair loss should be considered as the best method to assess the efficacy of scalp cooling.
