•A new multiscale model of the human cardiovascular system is described.•Healthy and pathological behaviors are correctly accounted for by this model.•Among four cardiac contractility indices, the end-systolic elastance is the least reliable.•The maximum time derivative of left ventricular pressure is the most reliable index of cardiac contractility.
