•The prognostic nutritional index was first demonstrated to be valuable in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery.•In this study, the index was introduced to patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.•We evaluated the prognostic effects of the index on this group of patients.•The index was found to be an independent prognostic factor for mortality in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
