•A gene expression-based risk score comprising HOXA4 and HOXB3 predicts PFS in patients with HGSOC.•Overexpression of HOXA4 or HOXB3 in an ovarian cancer cell model attenuates platinum- but not taxane-induced cytotoxicity.•HOXA4/HOXB3 risk score may serve as a prognostic biomarker for HGSOC recurrence following platinum-based chemotherapy.
