•We studied gait and postural stability in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1).•Lower-trunk accelerometry can be used to characterize gait impairments in DM1.•Muscle weakness in DM1 was associated with impairments in gait and standing postural stability.•Postural instability was associated with gait abnormalities in DM1.
