Abstract
•Polyphenols from Sambucus nigra L. extract were used to functionalize the gold nanoparticles.•NPs diminishes hepatic inflammation and oxidative stress induced by hyperglycemia.•NPs reduced the MMP-2 activity and the proportion of Kupffer cells in liver.•NPs present a great potential for further usage as adjuvants in diabetes.
