•Clenbuterol induces selective expression of the IL-1 system in the CNS.•Clenbuterol does not induce a classical neuroinflammatory or sickness response.•Peripheral effects of clenbuterol can be dissociated from central effects.•Repeated low dose clenbuterol does not induce depressive or anxiety-like behaviour.
