Bioadhesive and biocompatible films as wound dressing materials based on a novel dendronized chitosan loaded with ciprofloxacin

•New dendronized chitosan derivative with weisocyanate was evaluated as drug carrier.•Physicochemical properties of dendronized/non-dendronized chitosan were evaluated.•In vitro and in vivo assays of films for ciprofloxacin topical release were made.•Films exhibited biocompatibility, bioadhesion and ciprofloxacin controlled release.•Films demonstrated adequate antibacterial activity for applications in skin wounds.
