•A non-acid based, di-functional epoxide was used to modify cotton fabrics.•Cellulose structure was directly characterized by NMR within a fabric.•High NaOH concentration led to higher reactivity of the di-epoxide with cellulose.•Modified cotton fabrics did not lose tensile strength after the treatment.
