•Robustness of saline reactors was weakened at 1000mg phenols L−1 and 10g Na+ L−1.•Impacts of 20g Na+ L−1 and 2000mg phenols L−1 caused failure of phenol removal.•Higher concentration of phenols caused more reductions of the sludge SMA and SURs.•Phenols degraders were less tolerant to high concentration of Na+ and phenols.
