•The addition of LF slag to soil affects growth ability in Amaranthus plants.•No morpho-physiological alteration in 5% slag-treated plants occurred.•Higher slag level caused impairment of growth and photosynthetic machinery.•Metal(loid) accumulation differed between treatments and elements.
