•We observed that prediabetes was associated with post-stroke cognitive impairment in ischaemic stroke patients.•The prevalence of prediabetes in ischaemic stroke patients is high, and it may be necessary to take measures such as antidiabetic drug treatment to prevent the patients from post-stroke cognitive impairment.
