•The profile of RBSDV-derived small RNAs in infected maize plants was characterized.•RBSDV infection regulated the expression levels of ZmDCLs, ZmRDR6 and several ZmAGOs.•To our knowledge, this is the first report on vsiRNAs in a reovirid-infected plant.
