•The characteristic “hand-shape profile” of the TriAcylGlycerols of Argan oil is outlined.•UHPLC-PDA-ESI-TOF/MS and HPTLC methods for the TAG profile analysis are developed.•The screening of counterfeit argan-oil-based products is carried out simply and rapidly.•Argan oil in argan-based products is quantified.
