•Phobics present the same cortisol response to stress than non-anxious subjects.•Phobic subjects do not present a sensitization of the HPA axis in response to stress.•Psychosocial stress did not impaired memory retrieval in phobic subjects.•Psychossocial stress decreased the positive mood in phobic subjects.
