•Cyclists predicted a future turning manoeuvre of 24 lead cyclists.•Real world footage was presented.•Predictions were more accurate than on chance level when the cyclists went straight.•No effects of age, gender and experience were found on prediction accuracy.•Speed, head movements and a change in speed increased prediction accuracy.
