•Longterm NUC therapy of chronic HBV patients has no effect on blood and intrahepatic NK cell frequencies and activation.•The activation status of NK cells in liver and blood differs.•Repeated sampling of the liver by fine needle aspirate biopsies is a reliable method to monitor intrahepatic immunity.
