The bi-objective insular traveling salesman problem with maritime and ground transportation costs.

•A novel bi-objective insular traveling salesman problem is presented and formulated.•Maritime and ground transportation costs are optimized in terms of dock selection.•The problem was applied on a set of small, rural real-world instances in Chile.•Tradeoff between maritime and ground transportation costs is meaningfully analyzed.•This trade-off is partially explained by the number of islands and visited docks.
