Automated vision system for quality inspection of slate slabs

•The natural surface defects of slate slabs from a Spanish mine are analysed.•3D colour data of slabs are captured by a camera and analysed with a software.•Inspection algorithms were developed specifically to detect each trait.•The artificial vision algorithms provide a robust characterization of each slab.
