•A silver-based low-e coating optimized for PVT collectors is developed.•A highly-efficient PVT collector with low-e coating is designed and tested.•An accurate numerical PVT collector model is presented.•The low-e coating increases thermal efficiency at ΔT=50K by 60%.•The electrical efficiency drops by 3% only.
