Influence of PV technology and system design on the emission balance of a net zero emission building concept

•Influence of PV system design on net zero emission balance of buildings is analysed.•Crystalline silicon and thin film PV technologies are studied.•The results are calculated using of two different electricity grid emission factors.•Net zero energy balance is only reached for the largest PV systems.•Short emission payback time does not lead to the largest emission reduction.
