•Two Brazilian propolis was characterized by UPLC-QTOF/MS2.•Surprisingly, piperidinic alkaloids were identified among the constituents.•The cytotoxic effect of propolis extracts on melanoma cells was evaluated.•Both extracts exert their cytotoxicity by inducing apoptosis.
