User profiling and behavioral adaptation for HRI

•A survey of the recent literature on user profiling and behavioral adaptation in human-robot interaction is presented.•Approaches are categorized with respect to being mainly related to the physical, cognitive or social aspects of the interaction.•Key themes are highlighted to provide directions for future research.
