•Maximum voluntary bite force and number of occlusal contacts increase during the first 10 weeks of retention.•Settling occurs sooner with the wrap-around retainer and in males than with the Essix and in females.•Body mass index is not related to changes in maximum voluntary bite force and number of occlusal contacts.
