Anti-inflammatory capacity of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG in monophasic variant Salmonella infected piglets is correlated with impeding NLRP6-mediated host inflammatory responses.

•This is the first study to describe the interaction between Salmonella enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) in newly weaned piglets.•Oral administration of LGG accelerates the clearance of Salmonella and prevents excessive inflammatory responses in an S. enterica serovar 4,[5],12:i:- model.•LGG ameliorates enteritis induced by Salmonella by inhibiting the canonical nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway and attenuating the Nod-like receptor protein (NLRP) 6-mediated inflammasome in the intestines.
